Milo the Mouse Visits the Dentist and Doctor
By Bill Conley—America’s Favorite Children’s Storyteller
Moral of the Story:
Going to the dentist or doctor doesn’t have to be scary at all.
They help keep you healthy, strong, and growing tall.
Your dentist makes your smile shiny, clean, and bright.
Your doctor checks your heartbeat and makes sure you feel right.
Brave kids know these helpers care for you in every way.
You’re safe and loved each time you visit—it’s really a happy day!
In a cozy nook on Maple Street,
where the sunshine always peeked through the tall green grass, lived a little mouse
named Milo. Milo was a giggly, wiggly little mouse who loved to build forts
with his blankets, play hide-and-seek behind the big blue couch, and nibble on
tiny pieces of cheddar cheese.
Milo loved adventures—except when
the adventure involved the dentist or the doctor. Those two places made Milo’s
tiny heart do a nervous little flip-flop.
One sunny morning, Mama Mouse peeked
into Milo’s room while he was making a tower out of his toy blocks. “Milo,” she
said sweetly, “today we’re going to visit Dr. Bunny and Dr. Hedgehog. It’s time
to make sure your teeth are sparkly and your heart is strong!”
Milo’s ears drooped, and his tail
curled around his feet. “Do I have to go, Mama? What if it hurts? What if it’s
scary?” He squeaked, darting under his blanket and pulling it over his nose.
Mama Mouse gently lifted the blanket
and gave Milo a warm, snuggly hug. She rubbed his soft ears and said, “Sweet
Milo, our dentist and doctor are helpers. They make sure your teeth stay clean
and your tummy, ears, and heart stay healthy and strong. There’s nothing to be
afraid of—I’ll be with you every step of the way.”
Milo took a tiny breath and peeked
out. “Will you hold my paw if I get scared?” he asked.
“Of course I will, my little brave
mouse,” Mama said, giving him a kiss on the nose.
At Dr. Bunny’s dental office, Milo’s
eyes widened. The room smelled like bubblegum, toothpaste, and peppermint
mouthwash. The walls were covered with bright pictures of animals showing off
their shiny teeth—bears, bunnies, beavers, and even a big smiling tiger. There
were tiny toothbrushes in every color and a basket of colorful stickers at the
front desk.
Dr. Bunny hopped out to greet them
with a cheerful wave. She wore a light pink coat and a tiny pair of glasses
that made her look very wise but very friendly. “Hello, Milo!” she said with a
warm smile. “Come on in. Let’s make your smile sparkle like the stars!”
Milo climbed into the big comfy
chair that leaned back with a soft whirr. He squeezed Mama’s paw tight as Dr.
Bunny placed a tiny paper bib around his neck.
“Open wide, please!” Dr. Bunny said
in her gentle voice. Milo opened wide and closed his eyes. Dr. Bunny counted
each tiny tooth with a shiny mirror and a tiny, tickly brush. The brush buzzed
softly like a little bee, and Milo giggled so much he forgot he had been scared
at all.
“All done!” Dr. Bunny said brightly.
“Your teeth are so clean, I think they might twinkle when you smile!”
Milo peeked in the mirror and saw
his tiny teeth gleaming. He squeaked with delight. Dr. Bunny handed him a
brand-new blue toothbrush and a shiny gold star sticker. “Keep brushing every
day, and your smile will always light up every room you walk into!”
Next, Mama Mouse and Milo walked
down Maple Street to Dr. Hedgehog’s clinic. The waiting room was small and
warm, with soft green chairs and shelves lined with colorful books and wooden
toys. Milo squeezed Mama’s paw again as he watched other little animals reading
picture books and waiting for their turn.
Dr. Hedgehog came out wearing a
bright blue coat and tiny round glasses perched on the end of his nose. He had
a scratchy but kind voice that made Milo feel calm right away.
“Hi there, Milo! Ready for your checkup?”
Dr. Hedgehog asked kindly. Milo climbed onto the soft exam table, hugging his
tiny stuffed bear, Mr. Cheddar, close to his chest.
“Let’s take a listen to that strong
little heart,” said Dr. Hedgehog, placing the cold stethoscope gently on Milo’s
chest. Milo giggled at the tickly feeling.
Thump-thump, thump-thump. Dr. Hedgehog smiled. “Perfect! Strong and steady, just how
we like it!” He checked Milo’s ears with a tiny light, peeked in his mouth, and
pressed gently on his tummy.
Milo squeaked, “That didn’t hurt at
all!”
Dr. Hedgehog nodded and patted
Milo’s head. “That’s because checkups are to keep you healthy and growing
strong, never to make you hurt. You did so well today, Milo. I’m proud of you!”
He handed Milo a colorful sticker
with a smiling hedgehog on it and a tiny, swirly lollipop. Milo’s eyes sparkled
as he hugged Mama Mouse tight.
On the way home, Milo skipped beside
Mama Mouse, waving his toothbrush and sticker in the air. “Mama! It didn’t hurt
one bit! Dr. Bunny and Dr. Hedgehog are so nice. They’re my friends!”
Mama Mouse smiled proudly and
squeezed Milo’s paw. “That’s right, my brave little one. The dentist and the
doctor are our helpers. They keep you healthy so you can run, play, build
forts, and giggle all day long.”
When they got home, Milo lined up
his new toothbrush and sticker on his shelf. He told Mr. Cheddar all about his
adventure—how brave he had been and how Dr. Bunny’s tickly brush made him
giggle until he almost fell out of the chair.
That night, Mama Mouse watched Milo
brush his tiny teeth with his shiny blue toothbrush until they sparkled even
brighter than before.
“Mama,” Milo squeaked through a
mouthful of toothpaste, “when do I get to visit Dr. Bunny and Dr. Hedgehog
again?”
Mama Mouse laughed softly. “In a few
months, my brave little mouse. And next time, I know you’ll be excited and
ready because you know it’s nothing to fear.”
And from that day on, Milo never hid
under his blanket when it was time for a checkup. He knew that the dentist and
doctor were friends who helped him stay strong, healthy, and smiling
bright, just the way a giggly, wiggly little mouse should be.
Moral of the Story Poem:
Brave little ones, don’t worry or hide away in fear.
The dentist and the doctor are kind and always near.
They check your teeth and heartbeat to help you grow up strong.
Their gentle hands and caring smiles show where you belong.
A healthy body, a happy heart—a shining smile to share.
You’re loved and safe in every visit, held in gentle care!
