Benny the Beaver Takes the Big Leap
By Bill Conley

Moral of the Story:
If you hold yourself back because you are afraid to try, you may feel safe for
a moment, but you will miss the chance to learn, to grow, and to discover what
you are truly capable of, and while taking that first step can feel uncertain
and even a little scary, it is only by stepping forward with courage, giving
your best effort, and embracing the possibility of mistakes that you open the
door to new opportunities, build confidence within yourself, and realize that
success is never possible without trying, but when you do try, amazing things
can happen.
Deep in a bright green forest, where
tall trees stretched high into the sky, and a sparkling river flowed gently over
smooth stones, lived a busy little beaver named Benny.
Benny the Beaver was known for many
things.
He was kind.
He was helpful.
He was thoughtful.
But there was one thing Benny was
not.
Benny was not brave.
You see, whenever Benny had the
chance to try something new, he would pause… hesitate… and quietly step back.
“What if I can’t do it?” Benny would
whisper to himself.
And so, Benny often watched from the
sidelines while the other animals leaped, climbed, splashed, and explored.
One sunny morning, Benny’s friends
gathered near the river.
There was Oliver the Otter, who
loved to swim and spin through the water.
There was Fiona the Fox, who dashed swiftly through the trees.
And there was Leo the Lion Cub, who practiced his mighty little roars.
“Come on, Benny!” called Oliver.
“We’re building a new dam across the stream!”
Benny’s eyes widened.
A new dam?
That sounded big.
That sounded hard.
That sounded… scary.
“I don’t know,” Benny said softly.
“What if I mess it up?”
Fiona tilted her head. “But what if
you don’t?”
Leo stepped closer. “You won’t know
unless you try.”
Benny shuffled his paws and looked
down at the ground.
“I think I’ll just watch,” he said.
And so, Benny sat by the riverbank,
watching his friends gather sticks, carry branches, and place them carefully
into the flowing water.
As the day went on, something
interesting happened.
The dam wasn’t perfect.
Oliver dropped a stick and had to
try again.
Fiona slipped on a rock and giggled as she climbed back up.
Leo placed a branch in the wrong spot and had to move it.
But with each try, they got better.
Stronger.
Smarter.
More confident.
And slowly, the dam began to take
shape.
Benny watched closely.
He noticed something important.
His friends weren’t afraid to try…
even when they didn’t get it right the first time.
The next day, something new was
happening in the forest.
A tall log had fallen across a small
stream, creating a narrow bridge.
Oliver scampered across it easily.
Fiona tiptoed with grace.
Leo marched across proudly.
“Benny, your turn!” they called.
Benny looked at the log.
It wobbled just a little.
His heart started to beat faster.
“What if I fall?” he asked.
Oliver smiled. “Then you climb back
up.”
Fiona added, “We’re right here with
you.”
Leo nodded. “You don’t have to be
perfect. You just have to try.”
Benny took a deep breath.
He stepped forward… then stopped.
His mind filled with worry.
“What if I can’t do it?” he
whispered again.
Then he looked at his friends.
They weren’t laughing.
They weren’t judging.
They were smiling… waiting… believing in him.
And for the first time, Benny
wondered something new.
“What if I can do it?”
Slowly, carefully, Benny placed one
paw on the log.
Then another.
The log wobbled slightly, and Benny
froze.
“You’ve got this!” cheered Oliver.
“Keep going!” said Fiona.
“Step by step,” encouraged Leo.
Benny swallowed hard and took
another step.
Then another.
And another.
Halfway across, Benny slipped!
“Ahh!” he squeaked.
But he didn’t fall.
He steadied himself.
He took a deep breath.
And then…
He kept going.
Step by step…
Paw by paw…
Until finally—
“I DID IT!” Benny shouted, jumping
onto the other side.
His friends cheered and clapped.
“You did it, Benny!” Oliver beamed.
“You were amazing!” Fiona smiled.
“You took the chance!” Leo said
proudly.
Benny blinked.
“I took the… chance?”
Leo grinned. “You took the step, and
that made all the difference.”
Benny’s chest filled with pride.
He hadn’t been perfect.
He had wobbled.
He had slipped.
But he had tried.
And because he tried…
He succeeded.
From that day on, something changed
in Benny.
He still felt nervous sometimes.
He still wondered, “What if I
can’t?”
But now, he also asked something
else.
“What if I can?”
Benny helped build dams.
He climbed over logs.
He even tried swimming with Oliver—splashes and all!
And each time he tried, he learned
something new.
Each time he stepped forward, he
grew stronger.
And each time he took a chance…
He discovered just how capable he
really was.
One evening, as the sun dipped low
and painted the sky in shades of gold and orange, Benny sat beside his friends
by the river.
“I used to think it was safer not to
try,” Benny said.
Oliver nodded. “A lot of people
think that.”
“But now I see,” Benny continued,
smiling, “if I don’t try… I miss out on everything.”
Fiona wagged her tail. “That’s
right.”
Leo added, “Every great moment
starts with a brave step.”
Benny looked out at the water, calm
and peaceful.
“I think I understand now,” he said
softly.
“If you don’t take the chance… You
never get the win.”
And with that, Benny the Beaver
smiled—because he knew he would never again sit on the sidelines of his own
life.
Moral of the Story Poem:
If you stand still and never try,
Your dreams will pass you gently by.
But take a step, be brave, be bold,
And watch your story start to unfold.
You may slip, you may fall,
But trying matters most of all.
For every chance you dare to take,
Leads to the life you’re meant to make.
Questions to Think About:
1.
Have you ever been afraid to try
something new? What happened when you finally gave it a try?
2.
Why is it important to try, even if
you might not succeed right away?
3.
What is one new thing you can try
this week to be brave like Benny the Beaver?
