Sammy the Squirrel Was Afraid to Say Hello
Moral
of the Story:
Sometimes our hearts feel nervous
when we meet new people, but courage grows each time we try, and even the
smallest hello can open the door to friendship, kindness, and joy, reminding us
that we are never alone and that the world is full of friends we simply have
not met yet.
High in a tall maple tree lived a
young squirrel named Sammy.
Sammy had a fluffy tail and bright, curious eyes.
But Sammy had a problem.
Sammy was very shy.
Whenever he saw other animals
playing together, his paws felt shaky, and his tummy felt tight.
He wanted to join them.
But he did not know what to say.
“What if they do not like me?” Sammy
would wonder.
So Sammy stayed in his tree.
He watched the rabbits play hop and
chase.
He watched the birds sing songs
together.
He watched the beavers build their
dams near the river.
Sammy wanted friends.
But saying hello felt very scary.
One morning, Sammy sat quietly on a
branch watching the forest clearing.
Just then, a cheerful little chipmunk
named Charlie walked beneath the tree.
Charlie looked up and waved.
“Hello!” Charlie called happily.
Sammy quickly ducked behind the
branch.
His heart beat fast.
Charlie looked confused but
continued walking.
Sammy sighed.
“I wish I could say hello,” he
whispered.
Later that afternoon, Sammy saw the
wise old owl resting on a nearby branch.
The owl had watched everything.
“Why do you hide when someone says
hello?” the owl asked gently.
Sammy looked down at his paws.
“I am afraid they will not like me,”
Sammy said quietly.
The owl smiled kindly.
“My young friend,” the owl said,
“friendship always begins with one simple word.”
“What word?” Sammy asked.
“Hello.”
The next morning, Sammy saw Charlie
the chipmunk again.
Charlie walked past the tree humming
a happy tune.
Sammy’s heart began to race.
His paws trembled.
But Sammy remembered the owl’s
words.
Friendship begins with hello.
Sammy took a deep breath.
Then another.
Then he slowly climbed down the
tree.
Charlie noticed him and smiled.
Sammy’s voice felt small, but he
tried anyway.
“H…hello,” Sammy said softly.
Charlie’s face lit up.
“Hello, Sammy!” Charlie said happily.
“You know my name?” Sammy asked in
surprise.
“Of course,” Charlie laughed. “I
have seen you in that tree every day.”
Sammy blinked.
“You have?”
Charlie nodded.
“I was hoping you would come down
and play with us.”
Sammy’s heart filled with warmth.
All this time, he thought no one
noticed him.
But they had.
Charlie invited Sammy to play.
Soon, the rabbits joined them.
The birds sang cheerful songs from
the branches.
And Sammy laughed louder than he
ever had before.
The wise old owl watched from his tree
and smiled.
Sammy had learned something very
important.
Sometimes the bravest thing we can
do is say one simple word.
Hello.
Moral of the story poem:
A tiny word can change the day
A quiet voice can grow
And friendships often start to bloom
With one small warm hello
The world is full of smiling hearts
Just waiting, like you see
And when we take a gentle step
We find where we should be
Discussion Questions:
Why was Sammy afraid to say hello to
the other animals?
What helped Sammy find the courage
to speak?
What is one way you could say hello
to someone new?
