Oliver the Owl Finds His Voice
Moral of the Story:
Every child has a voice worth hearing, a
heart worth knowing, and a place in the world that belongs only to them, and
even when fear whispers that we should hide or stay quiet, courage grows when
we remember that we matter, we are loved, and the world becomes brighter when
we allow our true selves to be seen.
High in a tall oak tree lived a young owl
named Oliver.
Oliver had the softest feathers in the forest
and the biggest golden eyes anyone had ever seen.
But Oliver had a secret.
Oliver did not like being noticed.
Whenever the other animals gathered in the
forest clearing to play, Oliver stayed hidden among the leaves.
He watched the squirrels racing across
branches.
He watched the rabbits hopping through the
grass.
He watched the birds singing songs together.
Oliver wished he could join them.
But every time he thought about flying down
to the clearing, his stomach felt tight and his wings felt heavy.
“What if I say something silly?” Oliver would
whisper to himself.
“What if nobody likes me?”
So Oliver stayed in his tree where nobody
could see him.
One evening, a wise old turtle named Theodore
slowly walked beneath Oliver’s tree.
Theodore noticed the quiet little owl sitting
alone.
“Hello up there,” Theodore called gently.
Oliver blinked.
“Hello,” he whispered back.
The turtle smiled kindly.
“Why do you always watch but never join the
others?” Theodore asked.
Oliver looked down at his feathers.
“I do not think anyone would notice me,”
Oliver said quietly.
The turtle chuckled softly.
“My young friend,” Theodore said, “the forest
always notices the things that shine.”
Oliver tilted his head.
“But I do not shine,” Oliver said.
The turtle shook his head.
“Every creature shines in its own way.”
Just then, something happened.
A strong wind blew through the forest.
One of the baby birds lost its balance and
fell from its nest.
The little bird fluttered helplessly toward
the ground.
Oliver’s heart jumped.
Without even thinking, Oliver spread his
wings and swooped down from the tree.
He gently caught the tiny bird before it hit
the ground.
The other animals gasped with amazement.
“Oliver saved the baby bird!” the squirrels
cheered.
Oliver carefully returned the baby bird to
its nest.
The mother bird smiled gratefully.
“Thank you, Oliver,” she said warmly.
Suddenly, all the animals were smiling at
him.
Oliver realized something wonderful.
They had always seen him.
They had always known he was there.
And now they knew something else.
Oliver mattered.
The turtle slowly walked beside him and
smiled.
“You see,” Theodore said, “the forest needed
Oliver the Owl.”
Oliver looked around at all the friendly
faces.
For the very first time, Oliver did not feel
invisible.
He felt important.
And that night, Oliver the Owl found
something he had never found before.
His voice.
Moral of the story (poem):
Some voices whisper soft and low.
Some voices sing out strongly.
But every voice deserves to shine.
And every heart belongs
The forest needs each tiny spark.
Each feather, fur, and wing
And when we dare to show ourselves
The world begins to sing.
Discussion Questions:
Why did Oliver hide in the tree instead of
playing with the other animals?
What helped Oliver realize that he mattered?
What is something special about you that
makes the world better?
