Wally the Wolf Pup Chooses Water - A Children's Story

Wally the Wolf Pup Chooses Water
By Bill Conley—America’s Favorite Children’s Storyteller

Moral of the Story:

Your body needs water more than anything else to stay healthy and strong. Water cools you down when it’s hot, and it keeps your muscles and heart working properly. Milk helps build strong bones and teeth, but sugary drinks only make you tired and unhealthy.
Soda and sweet drinks may taste good at first, but they do not help your body grow.
When you play outside, run, or get sweaty, your body loses water and needs to be refilled. Drinking plenty of water is the best way to give your body energy and strength.
Choosing water shows you care about your health and your future. The healthiest, happiest children are the ones who drink water every day.

On a hot summer afternoon in the forest, Wally the Wolf Pup raced through the meadow with his friends. They played tag, rolled in the grass, and howled with laughter.

But after a while, Wally panted. “I’m so thirsty!” he cried. His fur was damp, and his tongue hung out.

His friend Benny the Bear pulled out a fizzy soda from his bag. “Here, Wally, want some of this? It’s sweet and bubbly!”

Wally took one sip. “Mmm, it’s tasty… but I still feel hot and tired.”

Ellie the Elephant filled her trunk with cool water from the stream. “Try this, Wally,” she said. She sprayed a gentle splash into his cup.

Wally gulped the water down. “Wow! I feel better already!”

Mama Wolf, who had been watching nearby, smiled. “That’s because water is what your body really needs, Wally.”

That evening, as Wally sat down for dinner, Papa Wolf explained:

“Water is the fuel your body depends on. It keeps your muscles moving, your brain thinking, and your heart beating strong. Without water, you slow down and get cranky.”

Wally tilted his head. “But soda tastes good. Why can’t I just drink that?”

Papa shook his head. “Soda and sugary drinks are full of sugar. They trick your taste buds, but they don’t give your body what it needs. Too much sugar can even hurt your teeth and make you feel sluggish.”

Mama added, “Milk is a good choice too—it builds strong bones and teeth. But water is what your body needs all day long, especially when you play outside.”

Wally thought about that. “So water is like a superpower for my body?”

Mama grinned. “Exactly!”

The next day, the friends played ball in the meadow again. The sun beat down, and everyone grew thirsty.

Benny opened another soda. Ruby the Rabbit had a sweet fruit punch.

But Wally carried a big jug of water. He drank deeply, then passed it around. “Here, everyone—try this!”

One by one, his friends sipped.

Ruby blinked. “I feel cooler already.”

Benny rubbed his tummy. “My stomach doesn’t hurt like it does with soda.”

Ellie smiled. “Water makes us strong!”

From then on, whenever the friends played outside, they always carried water with them. They still enjoyed milk with their meals, but they saved soda and sugary drinks for rare occasions.

As the summer went on, Wally noticed something else:

When he drank water every day, he could run faster.
He didn’t feel so tired.
His fur looked shiny.
And he even slept better at night.

One evening, as he curled up in his den, Wally whispered to himself, “The best drink for me is water. It keeps me strong, cool, and happy.”

And from then on, Wally the Wolf Pup was known not just for his playful spirit, but for teaching all the forest friends the simple truth: water is the best drink of all.

Moral to the story poem:

Water is healthy, pure, and true,
It keeps your body strong like new.
Milk builds bones so firm and bright,
But sugary drinks just aren’t right.
When you play hard beneath the sun,
Drink water first—it helps you run.
Choose wisely now, stay strong each day,
Water will always be the best way.

Discussion Questions:

1.     Why did Wally feel better after drinking water instead of soda?

2.     What happens to your body when you play outside and don’t drink enough water?

3.     Why are water and milk better choices than sugary drinks?
