Our Bodies as Temples: Choosing God Over Idolatry
Introduction:
In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we often forget the
profound spiritual significance of our physical bodies. As we navigate the
complexities of existence, it is crucial to remember that our bodies are not
truly ours; they are vessels bestowed upon us by our Creator. These earthly
vessels are meant to serve a divine purpose: to bring about the immortality of
all humanity through the acceptance of Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior,
baptism in His name, the reception of the Holy Ghost, and obedience to His word
and commandments until we depart from this mortal coil. In this exploration, we
will delve into the scriptural basis for this concept and examine how our
choices and behaviors can either honor or defile these sacred temples.
1. Our Bodies as Temples of God:
In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV), we find a poignant reminder of
the sanctity of our bodies: "Do you not know that your bodies are temples
of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not
your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your
bodies." These verses emphasize that our bodies are not mere physical
entities; they house the divine presence of the Holy Spirit and belong to God.
2. The Nature of Idolatry:
Before we delve further into the concept of our bodies as
temples, let us understand the nature of idolatry. In 2 Corinthians 6:16 (NIV),
it is stated, "What agreement is there between the temple of God and
idols?" Idols, in this context, refer to objects, desires, or practices
that are blindly adored or worshipped. They can take various forms, including
food, substances, or behaviors that become all-consuming in our lives.
3. The Idolatry of Food and Substances:
In our modern society, it is not uncommon for individuals to
develop a strong attachment to food, cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, or medication.
These substances can become idols when they take precedence over our
relationship with God. How much time do we spend each day consuming these
substances or under their influence? Such obsessions can have profound physical
and psychological impacts on our well-being.
4. The Consequences of Idolatry:
Idolizing these substances or behaviors can lead to adverse
consequences. Consider the person who is significantly overweight, the
alcoholic, the caffeine addict, or the one dependent on drugs or medication.
Their self-seeking gratification of these addictions renders them ineffective
in serving others and the Lord. The presence of the Lord's Spirit is driven
away by such idolatry, leaving individuals in darkness and despair.
5. The Call to Avoid Mastery:
In 1 Corinthians 6:12 (NIV), we are reminded that while all
things are permissible due to our free will, not everything is beneficial, and
we should not be mastered by anything. If we allow substances or behaviors to
master us, how can we let the Lord be our Master? Matthew 6:24 (NIV) emphasizes
that we cannot serve two masters; we must choose between God and our idols.
6. Food as Sustenance, Not Control:
Food, in its essence, is meant to sustain us, not to control us.
When we overindulge, under consume, make poor dietary choices, or combine foods
improperly, we allow food to control us rather than fulfilling its intended
purpose.
7. The Impact of Proper Nutrition:
Proper nutrition equips us with the strength and energy needed
to serve the Lord. It provides clarity of thought, mind, and purpose, enabling
us to focus on God's work rather than the effects of food and substances. When
we free ourselves from the clutches of food, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine,
drugs, or medication, we redirect our mental and physical energies towards more
valuable pursuits.
8. Using Our Bodies to Fulfill God's Purpose:
A healthy mind, body, and spirit are essential for fulfilling
God's purpose, which is to bring about the immortality of all humanity. When we
overindulge or defile our bodies contrary to God's commands, we render
ourselves useless in His service. It is essential to be cautious about
everything that enters our bodies, ensuring that it aligns with God's will and
magnifies our calling.
9. Maintaining Spiritual Receptivity:
The presence of the Holy Spirit within us is essential for our
ability to serve God. When we defile our bodies and minds, we become unable to
serve Him effectively. We choose to serve ourselves and the world instead of
God, leading to a state of pain, misery, darkness, and hopelessness.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, our bodies are not truly our own; they are divine
temples meant to serve the purpose of God's plan for the immortality of
humanity. We must prioritize our relationship with God over the idols of food,
substances, and unhealthy behaviors. By making conscious choices to honor our
bodies as temples, we create the space for the Holy Spirit to dwell within us,
empowering us to serve the Lord and experience the fullness of life. Choose
life, choose God, and choose to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior,
for in doing so, we find our true purpose and fulfillment.
