Grandpa Bear’s Promise
Deep in the heart of the forest, where the
tall trees whispered in the wind and the river shimmered under the golden sun,
lived Grandpa Bear and his grandson, Little Cub. Grandpa Bear was known for his
wisdom, kindness, and the wonderful stories he told by the fire at night.
Little Cub adored him and loved spending every moment he could by his side.
One bright morning, as the birds chirped and
the squirrels played, Grandpa Bear stretched lazily and looked at the clear
blue sky. Little Cub bounced over excitedly. "Grandpa! Grandpa! You
promised to take me fishing today! Remember?"
Grandpa Bear blinked. "Oh, fishing! Yes,
yes, of course," he said, rubbing his belly. But then, as he looked
around, he saw his favorite log bathed in sunlight, perfect for a midday nap.
"How about tomorrow instead, Little Cub?" he asked, yawning.
Little Cub’s ears drooped. "But... but
you promised."
"I know, I know," Grandpa Bear said
gently. "But the fish will still be there tomorrow, won’t they?"
Little Cub nodded slowly, trying to
understand. "I guess so..." he said softly.
The next morning, Little Cub woke up extra
early, his tiny heart full of excitement. Today was the day! He ran to Grandpa
Bear’s den, but Grandpa was already busy chatting with the other forest
animals. "Grandpa! Are we going fishing now?"
Grandpa Bear patted Little Cub’s head
absentmindedly. "Oh, my dear boy, I completely forgot! Let’s do it
tomorrow, I promise."
Little Cub’s smile faded. He nodded, but
inside, his heart felt heavy.
The next day came and went, and again,
Grandpa Bear found something else to do. Whether it was a nap in the sunshine,
picking berries with the other bears, or telling stories to the younger cubs,
something always seemed to come before their fishing trip.
One evening, as the sun set behind the
mountains, Grandpa Bear noticed Little Cub sitting alone by the river, poking
the water with a stick. Grandpa’s heart ached. He slowly walked over and sat beside
him. "What’s wrong, Little Cub?"
Little Cub didn’t look up. "Nothing,
Grandpa. I just... I thought we were going fishing today. But it’s okay. Maybe
another time."
Grandpa Bear felt a lump in his throat. He
could hear the sadness in Little Cub’s voice, and it made his big bear heart
ache. He suddenly realized what he had done. He hadn’t just broken a promise—he
had broken Little Cub’s trust.
"Oh, Little Cub," Grandpa Bear
said, wrapping his large paw around him. "I made a big mistake. I didn’t
mean to hurt you, but I see now that I did. A promise isn’t just words—it’s a
thread of trust, and I should never have let that thread break."
Little Cub leaned against his Grandpa’s furry
side. "I just really wanted to go fishing with you."
Grandpa Bear nodded. "And we will. Right
now."
"But Grandpa, the sun is setting."
"Then we’ll fish by moonlight,"
Grandpa Bear declared. "Come on!"
Excitement lit up Little Cub’s eyes as he
grabbed his tiny fishing pole. Together, they walked to the river’s edge, where
the water glowed silver under the stars. They sat side by side, casting their
lines into the quiet, rippling water.
As they fished, Grandpa Bear made a promise—a
real one. "From now on, Little Cub, when I make a promise to you, I will
keep it. No more excuses, no more ‘tomorrows.’ You are more important than a
nap or a chat or a berry hunt. You are my Little Cub, and I will always make time
for you."
Little Cub smiled up at him. "I love
you, Grandpa."
Grandpa Bear hugged him tight. "And I
love you, too."
That night, they caught only one small fish,
but it didn’t matter. The most important thing Grandpa Bear had caught was
something far more precious—Little Cub’s trust.
Moral of the Story: A promise to a child is a thread of trust that should
never break. Children remember what we say, and keeping our word builds a bond
that lasts a lifetime. When we make a commitment to someone we love, following
through shows them they truly matter.
