Milo the Mouse Finds His Brave - A Children's Story

Milo the Mouse Finds His Brave

By Bill Conley

Moral to the Story:
Even when we feel scared or shy, we are never truly alone.
God walks with us, listens to us, and gives us strength every step of the way.
When we believe we are loved by God, we can face new things with joy instead of fear.
With God by our side, we can be brave, bold, and full of light.

Milo the Mouse lived in a cozy hole at the base of a big oak tree in Maplewood Forest. He was small—even for a mouse—with soft gray fur, big round ears, and a tiny pink nose that twitched when he was nervous.

And truth be told, Milo was nervous a lot.

He was shy around others.
He was afraid to try new things.
And loud noises? Forget it. Milo would jump and hide!

“I don’t think I’m very brave,” Milo would whisper to himself.

His mama would smile gently and say, “You are braver than you know, sweet boy. And you are never alone. God is always with you.”

She would tell him stories from the Bible—about David and his slingshot, about Moses crossing the Red Sea, and about Jesus calming storms with just His words.

But still, Milo worried.

One morning, Benny the Beaver invited everyone to his pond for a picnic.

“There will be games, music, and lots of friends!” Benny said.

“Sounds fun!” chirped Ellie the Squirrel.

“I’ll be there!” squeaked Charlie the Chick.

Milo looked down. “I’m not sure,” he mumbled. “I don’t know if I’ll fit in.”

“You’ll be great,” said Benny kindly. “Come if you can!”

All day, Milo thought about it. He wanted to go. He really did. But what if nobody talked to him? What if he tripped or spilled something or didn’t know what to say?

That night, Mama Mouse tucked him into bed and whispered, “Milo, don’t forget what the Bible says. Joshua 1:9 tells us: ‘Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.’

“Even to a picnic?” Milo asked softly.

“Even to a picnic,” Mama said with a smile.

The next morning, Milo woke up with butterflies in his tummy. But he packed a tiny berry sandwich, brushed his fur, and took a deep breath.

“I can do this,” he told himself. “God is with me.”

As he walked through the forest, the sun peeked out and birds chirped above him. Each step felt a little less scary than the one before.

When he reached the pond, Milo stopped. There were so many animals! Some were dancing, some were playing, and some were eating together on blankets.

Milo’s feet froze.

But then he remembered Mama’s words and whispered, “God is with me.”

He took one step forward.

Then another.

Suddenly, Ellie spotted him. “Milo! You came!”

Charlie waved his tiny wings. “Yay! Come sit with us!”

Milo smiled shyly and sat down on a soft patch of grass.

Benny gave him a cookie. “Glad you’re here, buddy.”

As the day went on, Milo played hop-leaf, helped Ellie make a daisy crown, and even told a silly joke that made everyone laugh.

“I can’t believe it,” he said to himself. “I was so scared… but now I’m having fun!”

At the end of the picnic, Benny stood up and said, “Let’s each share something we’re thankful for!”

Charlie said, “I’m thankful for sunny days!”

Ellie said, “I’m thankful for my fast paws!”

Then it was Milo’s turn. He stood up slowly. Everyone looked at him.

“I’m thankful…” he began, his voice quiet, “that God helped me be brave today. I was scared to come. But He walked with me, and now I know I can do hard things.”

The animals all clapped and cheered. Milo felt warm and proud inside.

As the sun set and the animals began walking home, Mama Mouse was waiting by the tree.

“How was the picnic?” she asked.

“I was nervous,” Milo said, “but I remembered what you told me. And guess what? God really was with me.”

Mama smiled and gave him a big hug. “I knew He would be.”

Milo curled up in bed that night, holding onto a leaf Ellie had given him as a gift. His heart felt full. He still had shy moments—but now he had something stronger: faith.

And faith, Milo learned, makes even the tiniest mouse mighty.

That night, he whispered one more verse before drifting off to sleep:

"When I am afraid, I put my trust in you." – Psalm 56:3 (NIV)

And with that, Milo the Mouse dreamed of dancing butterflies, singing birds, and new adventures—none of which were too big for him… because God was with him every step of the way.

Moral to the Story Poem:
If you're feeling scared today,
Don’t you worry—just kneel and pray.
God will help you find your light,
And walk with you through day and night.
