What
is the work of God?
John 6:29 – The work of God is this, to believe in Jesus
Christ. This is the will of the father.
John 6:39 – That Jesus shall lose none of all that he
has given me, but raise them up on the last day. 40 – For my father’s will is
that everyone who looks to the son and believed in him shall have eternal life
and I will raise him up on the last day.
As
I have written about, the will and work of the Lord is to bring about the
immortality of all men through his son Jesus Christ.
Jesus is the
bread of life.
John 6:25-59
Jesus the Bread of Life
25 When they
found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you
get here?”
26 Jesus
answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not
because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had
your fill. 27 Do not work for food
that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man
will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
28 Then they
asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus
answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has
sent.”
30 So they asked
him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What
will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the
manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to
eat.
32 Jesus said to
them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given
you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread
from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is
the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they
said, “always give us this bread.”
35 Then Jesus
declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will
never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do
not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me
will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but
to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And
this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has
given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For
my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him
shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
41 At this the
Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I
am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They
said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know?
How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”
43 “Stop
grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus
answered. 44 “No one can come to me
unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last
day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They
will all be taught by God.’[b]
Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from
God; only he has seen the Father. 47 Very
truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your
ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,
which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the
living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live
forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
52 Then the Jews
began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to
eat?”
53 Jesus said to
them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of
the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal
life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 For
my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.
57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live
because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.
58 This is the bread that came down from heaven.
Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live
forever.” 59 He said this while teaching in
the synagogue in Capernaum.
Jesus is the
Light of the world
John 8:12 – I am the light of the world. Whoever
follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
Jesus is asked
to do Gods work
John 9:4 – As long as it is day, we must do the work of
the one who sent me. John 9:31 –
We know that God does not listen to
sinners. He listens to the godly man who does his will. John 12:26 – Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, my servant also will
be. My father will honor the one who serves me. Christ will set us free. John 8:34-36 – I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a
slave has no permanent place in the family but a son belongs to it forever. So
if the son sets you free you will be free indeed. John 8:31-32 – If you hold to
my teachings you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth and the
truth will set you free. 51 – I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my
word, he will never see death.
Jesus washed the
feet
of his disciples to demonstrate the importance to us that no man is greater
than another man.
John 13:1-17
Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet
13 It was just
before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to
leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the
world, he loved them to the end.
2 The evening
meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of
Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus
knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come
from God and was returning to God; 4 so he
got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around
his waist. 5 After that, he poured water
into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel
that was wrapped around him.
6 He came to
Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
7 Jesus
replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you
will understand.”
8 “No,” said
Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered, “Unless I
wash you, you have no part with me.”
9 “Then, Lord,”
Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
10 Jesus
answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their
feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of
you.” 11 For he knew who was going
to betray him, and that was why he said not everyone was clean.
12 When he had
finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do
you understand what I have done for you?” he asked
them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’
and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should
wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an
example that you should do as I have done for you. 16
Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a
messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now
that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
Key verse. 13 – You call me teacher and
Lord and rightly so for that is what I am.
14 – Now that I your Lord and teacher have washed your feet, you should
also wash one another’s feet. I set an example for you that you should do as I
have done for you. 17- When we serve others we will receive his blessing.
Jesus set the example of love and service. He
demonstrated that even though he was the Lord and teacher it was not beneath
him to serve his disciples by washing their feet.
I love you Lord Jesus, praise to you Lord
Jesus Christ.
Amen.
